Watch Out for Email Scams

Posted: 6/23/2022 1:24:44 PM

Scam emails are making the rounds this week.  The scammers are creating a Gmail account using the name of a department head or admin they found in our public staff directory. They send email to employees “asking for a favor” or “quick help”.  If you reply to this email, they will ask you to go buy gift cards.

You can spot this email scam in a couple of ways.  Firstly, the email has the header warning you it is an external (non-TCC) email.

CAUTION: This email originated from outside Tacoma Community College. Do not click links or open attachments unless you validate the sender and know the content is safe. If you are unsure, contact the IT Help Desk at x4357 (253-460-4357) or email support@tacomacc.edu.

The second giveaway is the “From:” email that is listed as a non-TCC account.

From: Your Boss <interimhead59@gmail.com>

If you spot one of these emails delete it and/or send it to spam.  If you see an email that you are unsure of, you can forward the email to support@tacomacc.edu and IT will take a look.
