Phishing Attempts / Scams

Posted: 5/30/2017 3:17:00 PM

We have been hearing of unsolicited phone calls from someone from “Business Solutions” asking about what types of printers we are using and offering deals on toner cartridges, etc. This is not a legitimate business partner of TCC. As a reminder….

Hackers will imitate and impersonate high-profile companies or websites (e.g., eBay, Amazon, Facebook, Microsoft, HP, etc.) or high profile departments such as the IRS and say that they’re experiencing trouble with your account or they want to verify information; all you have to do to fix it is to send them your username and password (or other information) to verify your authenticity or click on a link to verify information. Watch out for these scams!

Things to remember:

  1. If you don’t recognize the sender of an email or the caller, don’t offer any information or trust any attachments or hyperlinks
  2. Normally, banks or other financial related institutions won’t ask you to verify information through email.
  3. If you receive an email or a phone call that you suspect is not legitimate, please contact the TCC IT Help Desk at 253.460.HELP (4357) or itsupport@tacomacc.edu.
