Medical Billing Specialist (MBS)

Admissions Process

(46-48 credits)

The online Medical Billing Specialist Certificate prepares students for careers as medical billers, patient account representatives, medical claims reviewers and other support positions. This one-year certificate is fully online, admits in winter quarter yearly on a space-available basis, and has no formal application process. Students can attend full or part-time. The following schedule is based on full-time attendance. The program includes an internship consisting of computer-based simulations mirroring the professional environment. Students completing the MBS certificate are encouraged to sit for the national Certified Professional Biller (CPB) credential offered through the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).

Please review the Virtual Information Session for a complete overview of the MBS certificate and related programs.

Steps to Apply

  1. Apply to the college and finish the prerequisite courses. If you have questions about the enrollment process and completing prerequisite courses, contact Advising in TCC Bldg. 7 or call 253.566.6091.
  2. Once you have met with General Advising, completed all adult basic education and MBS prerequisite courses, contact the Program Chair for advice on enrolling in the MBS program. Do this the quarter before you expect to start courses: Corinne Jarvis, cjarvis@tacomacc.edu 253.566.5077.
  3. Register for classes. The MBS program chair will help you map out the courses you need to take. The MBS program runs on a space-available basis and is not selective entry. Each course has a limited number of seats. The MBS program admits in the winter. Students will begin enrolling in courses in mid-October during fall quarter. Students who are currently enrolled as of fall quarter will be given an earlier enrollment date which can assist in securing a spot in the winter cohort.
